At PAM Istanbul AI-LAB, we don't use AI as a "photographer replacement." We use it as a tool that speeds up and widens the production process. This piece covers how AI is changing fashion shoots, and how much it actually helps in each type of shoot.
Where AI enters a fashion shoot
1. Virtual models and virtual try-on
AI-generated virtual models are changing e-commerce catalogues. Showing a garment in different sizes, skin tones and poses no longer requires a physical shoot. This technology:
- Cuts shoot cost for e-commerce platforms by up to 60%
- Makes it easier to produce localised imagery for different markets
- Allows fast updates when stock changes
In the luxury fashion segment and in editorial shoots, though, the movement, texture and energy a real model brings are still irreplaceable.
2. Automated retouching and post-production
AI-assisted retouching is one of the most common uses in fashion photography:
- Skin retouch: smoothing that keeps the natural look intact
- Background replacement: moving a studio shot into different environments
- Colour consistency: automatically balancing the palette across a whole collection
- Ghost mannequin: showing a garment's form without a model
In our post-shoot process at PAM Istanbul, using AI retouching tools has cut our delivery times considerably, especially on high-volume e-commerce shoots.
3. Moodboards and concept development
Building a quick moodboard with AI before a seasonal lookbook strengthens communication with the styling team. Palette, atmosphere and pose references become visual within minutes.
4. Backgrounds and locations with AI
Shooting in the studio and replacing the background with AI is a strong alternative for brands that want to cut outdoor location costs. From Istanbul's Bosphorus view to the streets of Paris, every location can be simulated from the studio.
How effective is AI in each type of fashion shoot?
E-commerce (flat background): AI-heavy. Very high AI contribution, low human input.
Lookbook: hybrid. AI and human input balanced.
Editorial: human-led. Low AI contribution, very high human input.
Campaign: hybrid. Medium AI contribution, very high human input.
Backstage / BTS: traditional. Minimal AI, entirely human-led.
The rule is simple: the more "emotional" and "story-driven" the shoot, the more critical the human touch. The more "high-volume" and "repeatable" it is, the more value AI adds.
The AI-assisted fashion shoot process at PAM Istanbul
- Briefing and AI moodboard — we draw out your collection's DNA, build concept visuals with AI and share them with the styling team.
- Casting and styling — we work with real models and professional stylists. On luxury and editorial shoots this stage is non-negotiable.
- Professional shoot — we shoot in our studio or at Istanbul locations with our professional photographers. AI comes in here for set optimisation and on-the-spot frame checks.
- AI post-production — automatic retouch, colour correction, background editing and format optimisation, all accelerated with AI tools.
- Multi-format delivery — automatic crop and sizing for e-commerce, social, print and web.
AI fashion shoots for e-commerce brands
For fashion brands selling on e-commerce platforms (Trendyol, Hepsiburada, Amazon), AI-assisted shoots are particularly strong:
- High volume: for brands that need 500+ product shots per season, AI speeds the workflow up dramatically.
- Consistency: AI automatically keeps every product shot at the same light, background and quality.
- Speed: we can deliver web-ready images within 48 hours of the shoot day.
The most common mistakes in AI fashion shoots
Most brands using AI in fashion shoots repeat the same few mistakes. Knowing them matters for both cost and brand reputation:
- Leaving fabric texture to AI: generative models tend to "smooth out" the texture of velvet, leather, silk and embroidered fabric. The real feel of a garment is exactly what that texture sells, so material detail has to come from the real shoot.
- Hands and jewellery: AI still makes errors on hands, fingers and fine accessories. These areas shouldn't be published without a human check.
- Faking size diversity: producing different body types with virtual models is possible, but if it doesn't reflect how the garment actually sits on that body, return rates rise and customer trust takes a hit.
- Neglecting colour accuracy: the colour the customer sees on screen has to match the product that arrives. Letting AI shift the colour is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make.
Our approach is clear: use AI for volume, variation and speed, while keeping the touches that carry the brand's reputation under human control at all times.
